{"id":7930,"date":"2020-04-30T12:48:59","date_gmt":"2020-04-30T11:48:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theathenaeum.org.uk\/?p=7930"},"modified":"2020-04-30T12:49:05","modified_gmt":"2020-04-30T11:49:05","slug":"member-musings-the-rcmg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/enda.studiodev.co.uk\/wp\/member-musings-the-rcmg\/","title":{"rendered":"Member Musings: The RCMG"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Contributed by Proprietor Steven Lyus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nRhododendron Society was formed by four founder members: Charles Eley, John\nGuille Millais (a descendant of Sir John Everett) and JC and PD Williams, who\nmet at Lanarth in Cornwall and declared \u2018We are the Rhododendron\nSociety\u2019.&nbsp; In those early days, select members were invited to join,\nand were expected to write articles for its regular publication <em>The Rhododendron\nSociety Notes<\/em>. The Society held its first Annual General Meeting at\nthe Chelsea Flower Show in May 1916.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 104 years since that first\nmeeting, the Group has evolved: it now has 700+ members worldwide and has extended\nits scope of interest, now being known as The Rhododendron, Camellia and Magnolia\nGroup. It is a Partner Group of the Royal Horticultural Society and achieved\ncharitable status in 2015 with its aim to educate the public about these choice\ngarden plants, to help to conserve them for the future and to support\nprofessional gardeners and taxonomists by means of travel sponsorship to\nfurther knowledge of the three genera. Prince Charles is our current patron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Education of the general public\nis achieved through the content on our website, on which I have been the\nsub-webmaster for the last 20 years. I thought Athenaeum members might be\nfrustrated by not being able to visit the wonderful gardens around here,\nespecially in this Spring. Please have a browse over this website.
