SUMMARY:Rogue Agent: By James Crossland (Book Launch)
DESCRIPTION:A SPECIAL BOOK LAUNCH FOR ROGUE AGENT BY JAMES CROSSLAND\nIN LIVERPOOL’S ICONIC ATHENAEUM LIBRARY READING ROOM \nWEDNESDAY 16TH OCTOBER 2024\n6PM TO 8PM (INCLUDES TALK AND WINE RECEPTION) \n** BOOK YOUR TICKET ON EVENTBRITE NOW ** \nROGUE AGENT: THE THRILLING BIOGRAPHY OF ROBERT BRUCE LOCKHART\, BRITAIN’S ‘AGENT’ IN MOSCOW \nSir Robert Bruce Lockhart (1887–1970) was an impressive figure: a diplomat\, intelligence agent\, conspirator\, journalist and propagandist who played a key role in both world wars. He was a man who charmed his way into the confidences of everyone from Leon Trotsky to Anthony Eden. A man whom the influential press baron Lord Beaverbook claimed ‘could well have been prime minister’. And yet Lockhart died almost forgotten and near destitute\, a Scottish footnote in the pages of history. \nRogue Agent is the first biography of this gifted yet habitually flawed maverick. It chronicles his many exploits\, from his time as Britain’s ‘Agent’ in Moscow\, and his role in a plot to bring down the communist regime\, to leading the Political Warfare Executive\, a secret body responsible for disinformation and propaganda in the Second World War. \nExploring Lockhart’s unorthodox thinking and contributions to the development of psychological warfare as well as his hedonistic lifestyle\, late nights and many affairs that left him in a state of perpetual debt\, Rogue Agent tells the thrilling story of this unconventional war hero. \nJoin James Crossland in conversation with Ian Skillicorn of the Liverpool Book Club for this special book launch event\, which includes a live author interview and audience Q&A in the Athenaeum Library Reading Room\, followed by a wine and canapés reception in the News Room. \nThere are only a few tickets left at the time of writing\, book your place now via the Concierge.

SUMMARY:The Signalman
DESCRIPTION:The Athenaeum is delighted to welcome back ArtsGroupie CIC\, to perform their new production of the Charles Dickens classic – The Signalman. \nA ghostly figure has visited the signalman twice already\, each time preceding a terrible disaster. When the apparition appears for the third time\, it’s up to the signalman to decode its meaning and prevent another catastrophe. \nEnjoy a gripping slice of gothic horror from Charles Dickens\, regarded as the greatest horror story ever written. \nIn the tradition of classic oral storytelling\, a lantern and two players is all that is needed to tell the spine tingling tale of the Signalman. \n“The Signalman is a powerful and haunting story about survivor’s guilt and isolation – something we believe will be of striking relevance to our audience following the pandemic. Our inability to control events around us can be more frightening than any ghost\, as Dickens knew well. He wrote from experience\, a survivor of the Staplehurst railway disaster – events that both inspired and haunted the author.” \nReception drinks will be served at 7:00pm (Club wine or soft drink). \nThe performance will start at 8:00pm sharp\, admittance may not be possible after this time. \nBook your place now via the Members’ Area or through the Concierge.

From the golden age of post war planning to the decades of decline from the late 70s and 80s and focusing on the experience of Merseyside\, we’ll ask what lessons might be learnt from Britain’s post-war vision for building a new\, more modern and better future from the rubble of war. \nTickets £7.50 \nThe event runs until 1.45 pm\, but you are invited to stay to continue the conversation over drinks or a lunch in the Athenaeum’s newsroom. \nDesigns for Living is the latest in a series of Liverpool Salon discussions\, which explore the past as a way of thinking about future possibilities and reflecting on the problems of our own time. \n

SUMMARY:The Exchange: Free Your Mind - With Laura Dodsworth & Patrick Fagan
DESCRIPTION:An eye-opening look at the world of manipulation\, and what we can do to recognise and resist the daily attempts to control and influence our minds. “Manipulation is not new. But today’s combination of technology\, social media and AI\, combined with marketing and behavioural science\, is new in its sophistication and scale. Everyone wants to know their own mind. To do that\, you have to be able to understand and resist attempts to influence your mind.” – Laura Dodsworth and Patrick Fagan \nYou’re manipulated all day every day. We all are. Our social media feeds\, our governments\, our friends and family\, even the humble waiter who asks\, “Still or sparkling?” – they’re all conspiring to influence what we think\, feel and do. It’s turbocharged in the era of big data and AI\, and if you think you’re not being influenced\, you’re probably the most influenceable of all. \nFortunately\, bestselling author of A State of Fear Laura Dodsworth and former Cambridge Analytica behavioural scientist Patrick Fagan have joined forces to show you what’s up the magician’s sleeve. \nFree Your Mind is your field guide to navigating this information battlefield. Join Dodsworth and Fagan in a live discussion on powerful psychological principles like ‘nudging’\, cutting-edge science and anonymous insider access. They draw on interviews with mind-control experts ranging from monks to magicians\, to uncover their most deceptive techniques and expose the hidden tactics used to influence you\, from social media to subliminal messages. They also did the fieldwork so you don’t have to\, joining forums\, courses\, cults and digital detoxes. \nLaura Dodsworth\nLaura is an author\, journalist\, photographer and commentator. She is the author of the Sunday Times bestseller A State of Fear\, as well as a trilogy of books about the body. \nPatrick Fagan\nPatrick is a behavioural scientist with 12 years’ experience of mind manipulation. Previously lead psychologist at Cambridge Analytica\, he is now a part-time lecturer at Goldsmiths College\, University of London and University of the Arts\, and a guest lecturer at University College London\, as well as running several data consultancies. He is the author of Hooked: Why cute sells and other marketing magic we can’t resist. \n  \nTickets to the talk are available for £10.00\, a dinner is also available post talk for an additional £25.00 for three courses. \n  \nArrivals from 6:30pm \nEvent Commences: 6:45pm \nDinner: 8:40pm

SUMMARY:Liverpool Book Club: An Evening with Ramsey Campbell
DESCRIPTION:The Exchange in association with Liverpool Book Club & Liverpool John Moores University present an evening with author Ramsey Campbell. \nTickets to the talk are available for £7.00\, a dinner is also available post talk for an additional £25.00 for three courses. \nBook your places now via the Members’ Area or through the Concierge. \nHosted by The Liverpool Book Club. \n  \nArrivals from 6:30pm \nEvent Commences: 7:00pm \nAudience Q&A : 7:30pm \nBook Sales & Signing: 8:00pm \nDinner: 8:30pm \n  \nBorn in Liverpool\, Ramsey has lived all of his life on Merseyside and as a writer\, editor and critic\, he has been a creative force for over 50 years. He is described as ‘Britain’s most respected living horror writer’ in The Oxford Companion to English Literature and best-selling author Stephen King has said he is: “literate in a field that has attracted many comic book intellects\, cool in a field that tends toward panting melodrama…fluid in a field where many of the best practitioners fall prey to cant.” \nA precocious intellect\, Ramsey was reading at two and dabbling in writing by the age of seven. It was an apparently innocuous children’s tale which first peaked his interest in horror fiction. In a Guardian interview\, Ramsey explained how a Rupert Bear story called Rupert’s Christmas Tree had an unexpected effect on him. He said: “Rupert acquires a magical tree that decamps after the festivities and returns to its home in the woods…the details – the small high voice from the tree\, the creaking that Rupert hears in the night\, the trail of earth he follows from the tub in his house\, above all the prancing silhouette that inclines towards him\, the star it has in place of a head – are surely the stuff of adult supernatural fiction. I think I got my start in the field right there.” \nTwo key people are credited with nurturing Ramsey’s early fascination with writing – his mother and his English tutor at St Edward’s College\, West Derby. His teacher\, Brother Kelly\, regularly asked him to read his stories to the class and Ramsey’s mother Nora\, who herself had short stories published in writer’s magazines\, encouraged him early on to send his work to publishers. \nAged only 11 Ramsey submitted his first collection Ghostly Tales to a range of publishers and although it was rejected\, a letter which stated: “We don’t publish ghost stories\, but this is a promising start\,” encouraged him to keep writing\, and Ramsey continued to avidly consume the work of Lovecraft\, Bierce\, Kafka and the cinema of film noir. \nOn leaving school at 16\, Ramsey worked in the Inland Revenue but continued to write in his free time\, selling several of his early stories to editor August Derleth\, who went on to become a friend and mentor. At the suggestion of Derleth\, Ramsey rewrote many of his earliest stories\, moving their settings from Massachusetts to the fictional Brichester\, imagined to be near the River Severn in Gloucestershire. This change of locales led to Campbell’s first professional published work\, the story\, The Church in High Street in 1962 and the book\, The Inhabitant of the Lake and Less Welcome Tenants in 1964. \nRamsey left the tax office to work in Liverpool public libraries\, becoming a full time writer in 1973 after the publication of Demons by Daylight. His second hardcover collection of horror stories\, The Height of the Scream\, was published in 1976 as well as his first novel\, The Doll Who Ate His Mother\, which he now recalls had mixed reviews but has rarely been out of print since. Just three years later this was followed by The Face that Must Die\, which is still considered by many critics to be one of Campbell’s finest works. \nFrom that point onwards Ramsey published numerous novels and short story collections\, with hardly a year between publications. The majority of his work has been nominated for and has won major awards\, leading to him becoming one of the world’s most decorated horror writers. He has won four World Fantasy Awards\, ten British Fantasy Awards\, three Bram Stoker Awards\, and the Horror Writers’ Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award. \nHis passion for writing shows no sign of abating\, with Ramsey continuing to write in a contemporary style with modern day references. He frequently sets his tales on Merseyside and has drawn on local history and traditions – a book of short stories and ten novels to date.\nRamsey comments that\, contrary to what might be expected\, the older he gets the more appealing he finds terror\, saying: “Being made to feel by art is surely no bad thing – to be scared any more than to be made to weep or indeed to be amused out of one’s wits. It’s a way of engaging the imagination\, and a good deal is right with that.”

SUMMARY:Liverpool Salon Presents: Practical Utopias
DESCRIPTION:‘Practical Utopias’ is the latest in a series that takes the theme of utopia as a way of exploring possibilities of building other\, better\, societies while reflecting on the shortcomings of our own. \nJoin Kevin Bean\, Heather Alcock and Mick Owens to talk about three idiosyncratic practical utopias: the Chartists’ Land Plan\, Port Sunlight and the 2012 Olympic Park. \nThe discussion begins in the nineteenth century\, a particularly fertile time for social experimentation in England\, with a look at two very different attempts at improving the lives of working men and women in a rapidly industrialising economy: the Chartist Land Plan\, with its vision for extending democratic rights to working men and Port Sunlight\, one man’s vision for an ideal factory town built in an arcadian and utilitarian form. Coming right up to date\, we look at the Olympic Park regeneration as a promised transformation in East London from post-industrial dystopia to family friendly utopia. \nCan practical development and planning bear the weight of political visions and dreams of perfection? What compromises have to be made between pragmatism and utopianism or between freedom and social engineering? Are utopian dreams suitable mechanisms for political transformation or distractions from ‘real politics’? Can they deliver all the benefits that they promise or are they always doomed to disappoint? \nSpeakers \nKevin Bean \nKevin worked as a lecturer in Irish Politics at the Institute of Irish Studies\, University of Liverpool for eighteen years and continues to work as a writer and researcher. His interests include the history of British Labour movement and he is the author of The New Politics of Sinn Féin (2007). He writes on British and Irish politics in a variety of magazines\, newspapers\, and books as well contributing to radio and television discussions on these issues. \nHeather Alcock \nHeather is a PhD researcher at University of Liverpool\, studying the global value of Port Sunlight as a heritage site and influential utopian settlement. Heather has twenty years’ experience in the research\, analysis\, adaptive use\, restoration and sustainable management of listed buildings and conservation areas in the USA and UK. Her current research has supported Port Sunlight’s bid to the United Kingdom’s Tentative List for World Heritage Site inscription. \nMick Owens \nBorn and bred on the Wirral\, Mick worked for the Mayor of London\, where he played a senior role in planning and development\, including in the preparation for the 2012 London Olympic bid. Now a researcher\, writer and lecturer\, his new book\, Play the Game\, captures the drama of the Olympic bid and tells the story of the regeneration in the words of those involved. \nThe Liverpool Salon has been hosting public discussions around philosophical\, political and cultural topics on Merseyside for over seven years. Join us at Liverpool’s historic Athenaeum club for Practical Utopias\, the second in a new series of public conversations that take utopia and dystopia as themes for exploring the possibilities of building other\, and better\, societies\, while reflecting on the shortcomings of our own. \nThe talk is available to Members for £8.00 per person. \nWant to continue the conversation over a post-event dinner? The Dining Room will be open for pre-bookings following the event\, book your place now via the Concierge (concierge@theathenaeum.org.uk)\, three-courses are available for £25.00 per person. \n

SUMMARY:In Conversation with Professor Lucy Easthope: UK's leading disaster planner
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening in conversation with Professor Lucy Easthope\, world-leading authority on recovering from disaster. \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nProfessor Lucy Easthope lives with disaster every day. When a plane crashes\, a bomb explodes\, a city floods or a pandemic begins\, she’s the one they call. \nLucy has been at the centre of the most seismic events of the last few decades\, advising on everything from the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami to the 7/7 bombings\, the Christchurch earthquake in New Zealand\, the Grenfell fire and the Covid-19 pandemic. In every catastrophe\, Lucy is there to pick up the pieces and prepare for the next one. She holds governments to account\, helps communities rally together\, returns personal possessions to families\, and holds the hands of the survivors. \nIn her moving Sunday Times bestselling memoir “When The Dust Settles Stories of Love\, Loss and Hope from an Expert in Disaster”\, Lucy reveals what happens in the aftermath of a disaster and explores how we pick up and rebuild with strength and perseverance. She takes us behind the police tape to scenes of destruction and chaos\, introducing us to victims and their families\, but also to the government briefing rooms and bunkers\, where confusion and stale biscuits can reign supreme. Telling her own personal story\, Lucy looks back at a life spent on the edges of disaster\, from a Liverpudlian childhood steeped in the Hillsborough tragedy to the many losses and loves of her career. \nLucy’s book will be available for purchase and signing at the event. \nThe Athenaeum’s Dining Room is taking pre-bookings for dinner following the talk. This requires a separate booking and information will be sent with your confirmation email. \n  \nMembers of The Athenaeum can book now through the Members’ Area or through reception. As a result\, \nWE ARE ABLE TO OFFER FIVE BURSARIES OF £50 EACH TO POSTGRADUATE SPEAKERS. \n\nFor further information\, or to submit a proposal\, please contact Helga Müllneritschhelgamue@liv.ac.uk.
